What is effective weight loss? It is losing weight and then, more importantly, keeping that weight off. If you lose weight but then the unwanted pounds creep right back onto you, that’s really not very effective, is it?

How can you achieve the weight loss that you want in the first place, and then how can you keep it off? We’ve all seen the many and all-too-typical failures in this matter. Where do we begin with effective weight loss?

We begin on a weight reduction program with the knowledge that there is no such thing as any sudden motivation. There is no Dieting Muse or Workout Muse that’s going to come down and land on your shoulder and suddenly get you all fired up to melt those unwanted pounds. You have to realize that the only things that exist are you and your self-standards. When you decide that your present weight and your present looks are simply unacceptable and beneath your standards, you’ll find all the motivation you need.

Besides the intrinsic motivation that you need, losing weight is also about taking responsibility for yourself and your life. It is said that life is only 10% what happens to you, while the other 90% is all up to you. Effective weight loss is no different. The person who is going to lose the weight for you is not your trainer. It’s not your coach. It’s not the author of some book you read. It’s not either one of your parents. It’s not your siblings or your friends. It’s you, and you alone.

Once you have been motivated by your own standards and you have decided to take responsibility for yourself, in order to lose weight and keep it off you have to take effective weight loss practices seriously. They aren’t a game, they aren’t just some whim, and they aren’t a once in a while thing. Losing and keeping off weight require new habitations. In some ways you’ll have to adopt a whole new lifestyle.

Once you’ve decided that you’re going to lose the unwanted weight, you have to decide upon an effective weight loss program that will work for you. Are you an ectomorph, an endomorph, or a mesomorph? What are the dietary habits you presently have that you need to get rid of? What particular medical conditions do you have that you’ll need to work with? Have you ever done serious workouts before? You’ll need to answer all of these questions for yourself, and doing some research or consulting a personal trainer may help you a great deal here.

The place where most people attempting to lose weight fail is at the end! They lose the weight that they wanted to, and then they think they can go right back to their old ways that put on the weight in the first place. Why would you go back to the things that did not work? Well, change is difficult, somewhat painful, and frightening for most people, that’s why.

Effective weight loss, then, means making a lifelong commitment to changing what you need to in order to be the weight you want to be. Only commitment and seriousness of purpose can keep the weight off permanently.
