Anti-Aging-Natural Tips Help You Retain Your Capabilities As You Age

Why Must We Age?

Stay Positive!

Wouldn’t it be great to not have to grow old? To just be able to stop the body from aging at ….say 21 years old or so. Well unfortunately we just aren’t made that way:O(

At 56 years old (at the time of this writing) I’m starting to feel the effects of old age. Even though my mind is sharp, I’m in pretty good physical shape and I wouldn’t consider myself elderly, I can still see subtle changes taking place. You know, you lose a step, your thinking process begins to slow down just a little bit, you don’t recover from exercise quite as quickly as you once did, it seems like it becomes easier to put on that extra weight.

So why do we age? Although not completely understood aging seems to be a complex interaction of genetics, chemistry, physiology, and behavior. The bottom line is that no one knows for sure exactly why we age, we just do. Old age sucks, that’s why I’ll work hard at taking good care of my mind and body to delay and minimize the effects of aging for as long as possible! You may be a senior citizen but you don’t have to feel or look like one!

All Natural Tips To Help You Retain Your Mental And Physical Capabilities As You Age.

First off you need to follow my advice in my How to Live a Long and Healthy Life article. Just having healthy living habits can and will add years to your life. Even though we cannot stop the aging process, why not take care of yourself and slow it down as much as possible? Be proactive, nature will take her course, but don’t speed things up! Take care of yourself, and you may find people surprised when they find out how old you really are, your wrinkles don’t have to give you away!

Healthy Habits That Can Help Slow Down The Aging Process

  • Drink plenty of water daily-Water helps the body with virtually every bodily function (elimination of toxins, digestion, metabolise body fat, promotes healthy skin, increases energy, promotes healthy blood flow, helps promote healthy skin and prevent wrinkles, ect. ect.) There is no reason to drink less water and so many reasons to drink more, it’s a no-brainer! How much water is needed to maintain good health? There are many factors involved in determining how much water is enough, such as climate, exercise, the intake of other fluids, ect. I think one of the easiest ways to get enough water is too follow the 8X8 rule, and that is to drink about eight 8 ounce glasses of fluid daily. Although not carved in stone, if you drink about that amount of fluids daily you should stay properly hydrated.
  • Get regular exercise daily-Get in the habit of getting some type of exercise daily. Get out and do something! Exercise, like drinking plenty of fluids, cannot be overstated. Staying fit as you age will again help with about every bodily function, as well as help keep your mind sharp, and it’s a great stress-reducer. Try to get at least 30 minutes of some type of exercise 5 times a week. The larger the muscle group exercised the better, aerobic exercise tends to be the best, working hard enough to get the heart rate up some is a good idea. Practice deep breathing as you exercise,”belly breathing” if you will. Don’t overdo it though, stay within yourself, know your limits, exercise should be enjoyable. I like to take long walks (an hour or two) for 4 or 5 miles. As you get used to the exercise you can just increase your pace or walk up a hill to increase the intensity of your workout. There is of course many ways to get some exercise (calisthenics, weight lifting, aerobics, even yoga.) Everyday activities can become much more enjoyable when your in reasonably good shape (playing with the grand-kids comes to mind.)

    Exercise Daily

  • Control your weight-Keep you weight under control! Letting yourself become overweight can lower your quality of life in so many ways. Obesity is an epidemic in many parts of the world today. Excess fat slows down bodily function and stresses our aging bodies and minds unnecessarily. It’s been proven that fat actually accelerates the aging process making us old before our time. One thing that seems sadly lacking in our world today is simply “willpower”. Willpower to push away from the table just a little sooner, the willpower to take control of our lives and weight! There’s a lot of things in this world we have no control over, but our bodies are not one of them. You have total control over your body, so take that control and make your body what you want it to be! Thin people tend to live longer! Ok, the rant is over…sorry.
  • Eat healthy foods-The foods you eat can make a big difference in the way you feel. Eat healthy foods and you will not only be healthy but you will feel healthy! Eat lots of fruit and vegetables, limit the fat in your diet (especially the saturated fats), be sure add protein to your diet everyday (even more important as we age.) Take a good quality multi-vitamin with minerals daily. Choose the foods you eat wisely, if you’re over-weight eat less, if you’re under-weight eat more.
  • Don’t smoke, or drink alcohol to excess-A few drinks is fine just don’t over-do it. As far as smoking is concerned, it’s simple, just don’t it, it’s a proven fact that smoking ages you prematurely, and of course you could die from it.
  • Get plenty of sleep-Even though we seem to need less sleep as we age, it’s still important to get enough to give our aging bodies the time needed to replenish and rebuild. One of the best ways to improve the quality  of your sleep as you get older is to exercise and eat right. As you age you may want to experiment with napping during the day, or retiring earlier in the evening to improve the quality/quantity of your sleep. Have sex before going to sleep (it couldn’t hurt!) and you just might get a good nights sleep.
  • Exercise your mind-Stay active mentally, play games, read, practice meditation, enjoy a hobby, learn a new skill, volunteer, interact with other people, have a purpose in life, have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Think of others, use your knowledge and experience to make a difference in the world. Be active, be curious and creative,  and do good things for others, it’ll be great for your outlook on life and you’ll be more positive and feel good about yourself.

    Meditation Works!

  • Get some sunshine-Get outdoors and get some fresh air and sunshine regularly, but don’t over-do it as too much sun can age your skin prematurely, as well as contribute to the development of some cancers.
  • Manage stress-Learn to manage stress, life can be stressful, but learn to relax and cope with any stress in your life. The stress isn’t the problem-it’s how you react to it! Think positive, enjoy your life, live life to the fullest!
  • Get regular check-ups-Last, but certainly not least, be aware of any health issues that may arise through regular check-ups with your doctor. By early detection many health problems can be handled more effectively or alleviated completely. Stay aware of what’s going on in your body, don’t be taken by surprise!

Vitamins And Minerals That Help Slow The Aging Process

Supplement if Needed

I would suggest you take a high potency multi-vitamin with minerals on a daily basis. Buy your vitamins from a health food store, or online from links on this site, as opposed to a store such as Wal-Mart or Wal-Greens. This should ensure you get a higher quality, fresher product.

As we age the vitamins that have antioxidant properties (about as close to anti-aging as you’ll get!) become even more important as antioxidants helps protect our bodies from free-radical damage (a by-product of oxygen in our bodies.) Free-radical damage contributes to many age-related diseases. Many fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains, poultry, and fish are rich in antioxidants (another reason to eat them especially as you age.)

Here’s a list of supplements that have antioxidant properties and should be taken regularly to help prevent free-radical damage and help you live a longer healthier life:

Herbs That Can Slow The Aging Process

Anti-aging herbs have been used for centuries. These anti aging herbs have been used to improve blood circulation, help our bodies absorb nutrients, and eliminate wastes. Some anti-aging herbs are known to lift the spirit and clear and strengthen the mind, helping to lessen life’s stresses. As always you should consult your doctor before using any of these anti-aging herbs, or supplements.

  • Ashwagandha
  • Gingko Biloba
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Gotu Kola
  • Milk Thistle
  • Kava
  • Garlic
  • Rosemary
  • Bilberry
  • Red Clover
